CALL FOR PAPERS. The NEA invites proposals for sessions and papers to be presented at the annual meetings of the Allied Social Science Association (ASSA). 

DATE:  January 3-5, 2025 

PLACE: San Francisco, CA 

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: April 25, 2024  

Proposals for complete sessions (with 4-5 presenters and 4-5 discussants) are preferred, along with the name of the organizer who will take primary responsibility for communicating with session participants.  Single paper submissions will also be considered.

Program Chair, Robynn Cox, will help organize the sessions. Sessions on any topic will be considered, although we are especially interested in topics on the causes, consequences, and solutions related to structural inequities, including but not limited to:

  1. The impact of Historically Black Colleges and Universities
  2. The role of policy in addressing racial economic inequality
  3. Critical intersections of progressive policy: Worker’s rights, racial justice, gender justice, criminal legal system, and immigration
  4. The role institutions play in the causes, consequences, and solutions to racial inequities
  5. The impact of racial inequities on economic growth and development
  6. Racial/ethnic disparities across the Americas
  7. Causes and consequences of racial disparities in housing, food insecurity, health, aging, wealth, and the criminal legal system on the Black community and communities of color. 
  8. Stratification Economics
  9. Resource extraction and environmental justice
  10. Macroeconomic policy and racial inequality

Other topics not listed here related to the Black experience, as well as the experience of other communities of color, are also strongly encouraged.

Session proposals should include:

  1. The session title and abstract (250 word limit). Panels and roundtable sessions need only submit one abstract for the entire session. Paper sessions must submit abstracts for each paper.
  2. Primary and two secondary JEL classification codes that best describe the session.
  3. The names of the session organizer and the session chair.
  4. The titles and abstracts of the proposed papers (250 word limit each).
  5. Name of committed discussants. Preference will be given to sessions with at least four papers and four committed discussants.
  6. Contact information for the organizer, the chair, each author, and each discussant. Include their full name, title, affiliation, and email address. Please identify the presenter for co-authored papers. This information is essential.

Single paper submissions should include:

  1. The title and abstract (250 word limit).
  2. Primary and two secondary JEL classification codes that best describe the paper.
  3. Contact information for the author(s) and the discussant. Include their full name, title, affiliation, and email address. Please identify the presenter if the paper is co-authored. This information is essential.

Note that:

  • All submissions should be uploaded as a Microsoft Word attachment to https://nea.submittable.com/submit/.
  • NEA membership is required to present.
  • Accepted proposals (i.e., sessions or individual papers) submitted for consideration by the NEA should not be presented at another ASSA session. Please notify the program chair if you are withdrawing your submission.
